Keratin Smoothing Treatments: How they work and what they do.

April 5, 2016

Keratin Treatments are a professional salon service that removes frizz, adds shine, strength and manageability to the hair. They take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete. These treatments work by infusing Keratin; the natural protein that makes up our hair, skin and nails, into the cuticle layer of the hair. Over time the keratin in the hair begins to diminish which makes the hair fragile, frizzy, and dull. Keratin treatments replace the keratin protein that is missing; leaving the hair stronger, softer, and frizz free for up to 12 weeks.

When the cuticle layer of the hair is rough or raised the hair does not reflect as much light, feels tougher in texture, and is frizzy. If you were to look at a strand of hair under a microscope that is lacking in keratin protein it would like shattered glass. Essentially the treatments goes in and the keratin protein fills in all the “cracks” throughout the cuticle leaving the hair stronger, reflecting more light, and feeling soft and smooth.

There are many types of Keratin treatments, I work with The Brazilian Blowout. In my experience the Brazilian Blowout leaves the hair with a bit more body and volume than other smoothing treatments, which in my opinion have left the hair a bit flatter and weighed down. Neither of the treatments will completely straighten the hair but they can relax a bit of curl depending on how much of the curl someone gets from frizz. The purpose of a Keratin Treatment is to add instant health and manageability to the hair. Making it easier for you to style as you prefer and insure frizz-free shiny hair no matter what the weather is like.

There are no time restrictions the day you recieve the Brazilian Blowout, you are able to go home and wash your hair whenever you'd like.

The proper after care is essential to insure the full benefit and longevity of the treatment. The Brazilian Blowout Acai Anti Frizz Shampoo and Masque is what I recommend to my clients, they are specifically designed to extend the life of the treatment.

Points to remember:

-Always shampoo and condition your hair with the recommended line in conjunction with your treatment.

-Try and avoid salt water and chlorine. Prior to swimming, saturate your hair with water and comb through a small amount of conditioner or leave in conditioner before getting in the ocean or the pool.

-The treatment will gradually dissipate from the hair evenly root to end and return to its original state after 12 weeks, it does not grow out leaving a line of demarcation at the root.

-A Keratin Treatment is not a relaxers and is not intended to straighten the hair, It only replaces the keratin that is missing.
